[Cabin Crew’s Vlog] Greetings from Emma

If a picture is worth a thousand words, then a video must be worth a million words! Forum Pramugari welcomes fellow cabin crews from any airlines to write or create interesting stories about the dream job. And here comes a good news for you! Emma, the lovely flight attendant from Cathay Pacific, whose Cabin Crew’s Story was the pioneer of such story in this blog, contributed her best in making a vlog!

What is a vlog? Vlog is short for video blog. Basically she will be telling stories and fun facts from her daily life as a flight attendant. Not only that, she is willing to spare her time to answer your questions about being a flight attendant or any other related things that she is able to answer accordingly πŸ™‚

Enough for the introduction, now it’s your time to watch the video she made by herself πŸ™‚

So, what do you think about the video? Interesting, rite? Looking forward to watch another video from Emma, or have some thoughts to be spoiled and questions to be answered? Just tell us! πŸ˜€

For those who want to ask a question or two, kindly write it on the comment box below. Emma will be more than glad to answer your inquiries and probably your questions and / or thoughts will be a good topic for her next video! πŸ˜€

For fellow flight attendants who want to contribute a vlog to be posted here, kindly email me with the subject “Cabin Crew’s Vlog” and send your ideas to forumpramugari@gmail.com. Your ideas and contributions are highly appreciated and get prepared to gain some fans here, hehehehe~

hai emma, can you tell me if i can speak only dayli english could it be enough to apply for international airlines?? thx before πŸ˜‰

    • noodlyemilie May 14, 2013 at 1:48 PM Reply

      Hi Putri,

To be able to hold a conversation with passengers, using a proper service language is crucial. I’m sure both domestic and international airlines have a high standard and requirement in English fluency.

You have to be able to understand the passenger and your colleague, to avoid miscommunications, which I think a simple daily english would be sufficient for.

However, do remember that this is more than just a service industry. Recently I had to attend to yet another medical emergency in flight. I had to call medlink (it’s like a hotline for a group of doctors/paramedics to assist us with any medical emergencies in flight). I had to get medical history from the passengers, write down signs and symptoms of the pax. It has to be precise in order for medlink to be able to diagnose the pax, so in this case, a more advanced english would always be good to master πŸ˜€

In sum, daily english is good enough…but I’m sure you would like to be able to impress your passengers and colleagues *wink*

Go watch more tv series or movies, learn to not use the subitles provided. That way, you’ll learn faster. Movies and TV shows were my English teachers.

  8. HB May 14, 2013 at 9:47 PM Reply

Hi, Emma. I must say that you are very humble. I think CX had made the right decision hiring you as one of their cabin crew members. I just want to ask this. I happened to look at a roster of an F/A with CX, there I saw abbreviations like RON and VV. Can you please explain what they mean and stand for? Thanks a lot. I’m super super curious.

    • sza May 15, 2013 at 12:07 PM Reply

RON for Remain Over Night? Am I correct?

    • noodlyemilie May 15, 2013 at 2:09 PM Reply

      Hi HB & Sza,

Honestly I don’t know what they stands for =.=” because there are a list of abbreviations in our crews’ website. However, there are only a handful that we use in our roster. PX (non-operatin flight), PY (ferry flight), FX (duty free), FD (familiarization duty), just to name a few. And I suppose that’s where the list of abbreviation comes in, sometimes, you either call the company for a more thorough explanation, because it may be a special duty or flight for us.

Thank you for your kind words HB πŸ˜€

      • MFA May 16, 2013 at 12:10 PM

    • noodlyemilie May 15, 2013 at 2:16 PM Reply

My goodness, where to start? I watch a lot of movies, since I have a lot of spare time at hand. I learned English when I was 13 through Barney the Dinosaur TV show, but I guess you wouldn’t want to watch that now would you? :p

I suppose I can recommend you a few TV shows:
      – 2 broke girls
      – Modern Family
      – Supernatural
      – How I met your Mother

Honestly, there’s too many. You have to go choose which tv show/movie category you like. I think my first english TV show I followed was The OC. For as long as you like the story, and it is something that will get you hooked. Watch ’em!! Not to forget english books or magazines, and can’t go through life without music now can we?!

hi emma, I am very interested in seeing your vlog, I wanted to be a flight attendant, but I was not confident.

    • noodlyemilie May 15, 2013 at 2:26 PM Reply

      Dear Nesia,

Wanna know a secret? I was the shyest person back in school! I was never confident, I thought I was awkward and everybody else were better than me. Standing or speaking in public would give me clammy hands and rapid heartbeats. I preferred to be invisible.

But when I was in University, I had to do a lot of presentations in front of the class. Be more vocal in class, and be more sociable. I had to force myself to do all that, the first few seconds before you start your presentation was the hardest, but once you begin, you’re fine! It’s all about the strength to take that first step out of your comfort zone.

It’s actually really nice to have yourself heard by the whole class, if you did something embarrassing, laugh it off. Learn to joke about your silly mistakes. I had many friends in University, I loved doing presentations since it was a happy, thrilling adrenaline in my system.

Don’t think anything less of yourself, because your flaws are the most attractive thing about you. I know it’s very cheesy, but it’s true. I love seeing the flaws in other people, that’s what make them unique, quirky and memorable.

If you would like to have a little boost of confidence before your interview or anything, I’d be happy to help. Make sure you try out for any upcoming interviews yeah!!? You might just make it, or even if you failed, you have stepped out of comfort zone! πŸ˜€ You’ll be more confident and more experienced for another try.

      Hi Mario,

Very kind of you to stop by and say hello! Hi to you and your wife. I went to the Vine and YMCA a few times with my friend Kay, but I don’t think I’ve been to the one in causeway bay. In addition to that, I’m barely ever in HK, on my day off..I would fly back to spend time with family hahaha! It’s been too long since I have a church gathering, I used to do that with my church leaders and university friends back in Brisbane, every Fridays and sometimes Wednesdays. We’d play games (ice-breaker), play music, praise and dance (hahaha), eat lots of home made food (asian food). I would love to come and visit you one of these days!

      • Mario June 3, 2013 at 4:32 PM

        Hi Emma,

Your welcome! As fellow Indonesian, we ought to be friendly to other right? Especially we’re now far far away from Indonesia. πŸ™‚ And if you really interested to visit the church, I can email the detail to you because we have different kind of gathering at Saturday night instead Sunday. Btw, I have favor…someone I know wants to apply to CX. Is there any recruitment going on? I heard some talks, CX will have recruitment this summer. Any specific info you can tell, for local only or applicable to expat? haha…(somehow I kind of ask you to become a spy)

        best wishes,

Hi, Emma! When you’re travelling, do you prefer taking pics with iPhone or Samsung (Galaxy S-series)? I really wanna buy one of the gadgets, but the camera quality is my biggest consideration. This might be not-so-crucial, but I really need your tips! Hahahahaha. Thank you.

    • noodlyemilie May 31, 2013 at 12:29 PM Reply

Hi Leila (cool name, reminds me of Princess Leia),

It’s always been Nokia for me since I was a teen, and then iPhone. I stay true to one brand because I’m not tech savvy. So to try to make a transition from one phone to another is like a torture for me. Therefore, to answer you question, based on a biased opinion..hehehehe…iPhone!!

To me, iPhone’s size is more suitable for me, I can do a lot of thing with one hand. Samsung’s waaaay to big, you need both hands to operate. Plus, it takes up more space in my bag 😦 especially when you want to walk around with just a little sling bag or clutches.

      A few other reasons:
iPhone, easier to sync and operate because i’m a mac user.
      The apps are great.
Best of all, they take great pictures and videos! Weeeee~

Hope it helps with your decision making. But hey, I’m being biased here, so do try somebody else’s Samsung Galaxy first okay?!

Btw, CX in LA and SF are recruiting FA. The requirements are too difficult because of Asian languages proficiency like Mandarin, Japanese, Tagalog, Hindi, and Cantonese.
Where did you go for vacation?
I wish I can go on vacation like you. Pray for me to get flight attendant job.

Just replied your email, it’s long due I know 😦 Sorry Irene, I hope it’s not too late. For the record, your CV is impeccable! And it’s not hard, for as long as you’re fluent in English and one other Asian Language. I’m guessing, you’re able to converse in Indonesian language? πŸ™‚

and my question is, why do you choose to be Flight Attendent ?. coz its my question to myself too. i know its weird, but yeah, i do like that job, i want to be stewardess so bad. but i have no good reason to be. hehehe i just.. i like it, and i want to be. please please please help me to have good reason to be stewardes to get my parents bless πŸ™‚

My apologies Riana for the late late reply. I’ve only seen the lastest notification via e-mail. I don’t even know how it didn’t get to me! Sorry! So I’m going to reply this now…I hope it’s not too late.

Alright, now let’s answer some questions!
Why did I choose to become a flight attendant, honestly it’s because in today’s world, the older generations don’t seem to understand how tough it is for newly graduates to find a good decent job, one that pays well and one that would make us happy! I had found a job at a hotel prior to applying to CX, but my goodness, I knew I was going to hate that job … it looked depressing! My own personality is very outgoing, I can’t do a 9 to 5 job, five times a week, I would go mental. I’ve always wanted to travel the world, I have dreamed of shopping in New York, have a big slice of pizza in Rome myself, pet the lion in Johannesburg, ski trip in Vancouver, sleep in my comfy bed in Dubai….or get lost in a new place I’ve never been to… typical dreams from watching a little too much movies! So I think that pretty much explains why I wanted to become a flight attendant, it’s an opportunity to travel the world and get paid for it! I have many tales to share to my friends and my children one day, it’s exciting!

So I hope you’ll find the answer for yourself soon!!

    Hi Emma! How are you?
I’ve been wondering for quite some time now before applying for FA in any airline, in your expirience, what is the worst thing that has happened to you as a cabin crew? Thanks πŸ™‚

    • noodlyemilie January 2, 2014 at 2:19 AM Reply

Hi Niken, i’m sorry I didn’t get any notifications on my e-mail that you wrote something on this wallpost. I hope it’s not too late to answer it!!

What’s the worst thing that had happened to me ….. hmmmm
I can narrow it down to 3:
      1) My passenger died of a heart attack, I was the one who found him and we tried to save him, but it was too late. It’s alright though because it’s actually not rare for such incidents to occur in flight. I don’t feel traumatized or anything, as you can see, I’m still a happy happy me πŸ˜€ I’ve had my fair share of emergency scares, so I’m numb.
      2) Dealing with delayed or cancelled flights…I recently got stuck in Chicago for 8 days, because two of our aircrafts had some serious technical problems. I had plans to go back to spend time with family before christmas, what was supposed to be a 6 days home with family, was cut into 3 days 😦 so you have to get ready to sacrifice your time with loved ones.
      3) Facing angry or mental passenger, it’s normal..I got used to it hahahaha!! You’ll learn how to deal with such passenger calmly and gracefully.

  21. Rio June 7, 2013 at 4:36 PM Reply

What a pretty smile you have, Emma! No wonder CX recruited you.

Anyways, my name is Rio and I have only one question to ask. My question is: why do many global airlines nowadays tend to arrange out port recruitments and hire international cabin crew? I know this is related to globalization, but I am seeking for a more specific reason. Hope you can break my confusion. Thanks.

    • noodlyemilie January 2, 2014 at 2:43 AM Reply

      Hi Rio,

I believe this is a fairly simple question to answer. “International Airlines” πŸ™‚ when dubbing yourself with such title, you are obligated to provide the best for the passenger to stay competitive and/or to stay on top of other airlines. But why recruit international cabin crews?

This is for both service and safety reasons! Let’s talk about it through Cathay Pacific’s point of view. It’s a Hong Kong based International Airline, and the language spoken in HK is mainly Cantonese/Mandarin. English is an international language that I’m sure many other airlines would look into when recruiting cabin crews, to ensure that international cabin crews would still be able to communicate well in English, on board! Oh and don’t forget that our pilots are mostly recruited from Australia, United Kingdom, America, Canada, New Zealand, South Africa, etc.. so English is the language we use to communicate with them at all time.

There are many HK cabin crews who are able to communicate with our chinese passengers, but what if we have to fly to places like Japan or Korea? English is not something that they are fluent with, many of our travelers are old, and never had the chance to learn English..so that is where the need for Japanese or Korean flight attendant comes in to play, to translate!

Let me give you a few examples for service and safety reason:
Service: If the passengers have special dietary needs, like maybe they are vegetarian or allergic to certain foods and they need to make sure that the food we are serving is safe for them to consume.
Safety: To help them understand our safety regulations, or should there be a medical emergency, we would be able to translate informations from the passenger.

And if you were wondering, then why didn’t CX recruit more cabin crews from all over the world? Because it all depends on the type of passengers that we carry, since we are in HK, our passengers are mostly from neighboring countries in Asia. We do get European passengers, but most Europeans are fluent in English, many of them are trilingual even!

I hope this answers your question..if not, do tell me :3

Not too worry, they are nice and all but things got a little out of hand when they began to explore my friends and started to add my cabin crew friends, even my boyfriend….so, lesson learnt hahaha!
